Sunny Seeds Project

Although my summer vacation of 2008 has been filled with a large number of different cases, I still went to Sichuan Province where a serious earthquake took place only two months ago. What I saw, what I heard and what I felt are really unforgettable to me.

It is known to most of people that on May 12th, 2008, a serious earthquake convulsed the Sichuan Province, China. As soon as the words came through, almost all the people take part in helping and raising money. As a student in Shanghai, I could not fly to Sichuan as soon as possible. What I could only do was to donate money and assist my school’s charity club to hold other charity activities. However, listening to the radio, watching TV news and searching for the information on the internet were not enough to me. Trying my best to look for other chances to go to Sichuan, I, fortunately, came up with Sunny Seeds Project as the “accountant” of the voluntary team, taking charge of the meals.

Together with other volunteers of Sunny Seeds, I went to Qingchengshan Town, Sichuan, from July 19th to 21st. During those three days, I stepped on the ground which had survived from the earthquake, feeling the tough time survivals were experiencing.

Our first destination was Museum Cluster Jianchuan, built by Mr. Fan Jianchuan, where a collection of practicalities of the earthquake was held. Although every volunteer had already reckoned how shocking the pictures and the things would be, everyone was again astonished by the collection. Standing in Sichuan offered us a dissimilar feeling, anxiety and strong suffering.

On second day, we, volunteers, were divided into several groups to handle separate tasks. I, together with some other volunteers, went to condole those residents who lived in tents, bringing some goods. Seeing the poor living condition, all of the volunteers convinced the idea to go to as many tents as possible while the hot weather made everyone sweating a lot.

The last day must be the most exciting one to not only volunteers but also the students in Qingchengshan School. Sunny Seeds Project had decided to hold the singing competition and many sports activities. Every volunteer tried best to decorate the classrooms and help the activities go on smoothly, putting up wonderful ornaments, hanging up colorful balloons and organizing different students attend distinct activities. Looking at those innocent smiling faces, hearing those naïve laughs and watching those natural performances, everyone present, including I, felt contented and satisfied than ever before.

Three days flied quickly. This time’s Sunny Seeds Project came to an end yet our voluntary work would never face an end. During the busy three days, I see the optimism from the Sichuan people while I feel strong love from all of our volunteers.

I believe that only love could be the bridge which link diverse people whoever they are, wherever they come from and whenever they meet each other. I have realized that love is what the words cannot describe; love is what the sentences cannot explain; love is what can only felt by heart.
